Abstract
This lesson is designed to engage the students by exposing them to images of the Great Depression. Most students do not have any connection to this era, other than perhaps a grandparent for example, and therefore do not have a solid understanding of this time in American history. In order for the students to gain an appreciation for the impact the Depression had on Americans, they will view a slide show of selected images that capture the world of the Depression. Moreover, this lesson will serve as an introduction for the greater project of reading The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck.

Objectives
Students will be able to:
1. The students will observe a slide show of the Great Depression and share their reactions to the slide show in a reflective writing.

Standards
VP-P3 Analyze and evaluate the impact of visual media on the intended audience.
W-P2 Write a persuasive essay that contains effective introductory and summary statements; arranges the arguments effectively; and fully develop the ideas with convincing proof, details, facts, examples and descriptions.
PO 2: Develop the point of view with ample and convincing support appropriate to audience and purpose.
PO 3: Create an organizational structure that includes an effective beginning, middle and ending.

Teacher Background
The teacher will have to visit the provided website and collect the photos. The teacher will then have to create a slide show. This process is quite simple when using Microsoft PowerPoint. Along with each picture is important information that would be relevant to give to the students. The teacher will also want to organize some notes on the Great Depression, information the teacher feels necessary to go over with the students. This type of information can be found in any history text, or related website.

To obtain the photos:

1. Visit the provided website
2. Left click on a photo
3. Right click on photo and move cursor to “save picture as…”
4. Perform this process for each picture while making notes of the provided information.
5. After collecting all photos, organize photos into a slide show using Microsoft PowerPoint.

Activity
1. All equipment should be set up and ready to go when the class begins.

2. Take a few minutes to focus students on the Great Depression. Conduct a brief discussion asking students what they know about this era. You may want to put the responses on the board. Ask students when it occurred, what caused it, how long did it last?

3. The teacher should then transition into the slide show. Inform the students that they will be viewing a slide show of images taken during the Great Depression.

4. The student should do nothing but observe the images. While viewing the images, the teacher should go over the information that accompanied each photograph. Allow students to make observations as they see fit.

5. Assign in-class reflective writing:

A. Give students the rest of the class to further respond to the slide show and observations in a reflective writing assignment using the following prompt:
1. With what feeling (s) does the slide show leave you? Include the impact certain images had on you and what they made you think about.
B. Some parameters for the format should also be laid out for the students. Their responses should be organized into a beginning, middle, and end and give ample support.

6. Students turn in writing at the end of class.
